In Six Months, I...

where: Marina Bay Gardens

PEOPLE SAID that college major will shape your way you think and act, and that is true. These are the things I experienced in my first 6 months of my architecture course that brings new changes in my life:

In approximately six months, I…

1. Kinda Learned How To Tackle Creative Assignments
My first biggest mistake: menganggap bahwa tugas – tugas  perkuliahan arsitektur itu sama dengan tugas di SMA yang waktu pengerjaannya bisa sekenanya di timer. We can say, “Okay, 2 jam buat PR biologi” but to say “5 jam buat sketch rupa dasar”? “3 jam buat maket studio”? These are the big fat lies I continuously try to make myself believe. Bikin kop buat rupa dasar aja bisa makan waktu 15 menit, apalagi gambarnya. And God knows how long it takes for your mind to finally decide and commit on what kind of concept you want to create for your studio assignments.

Tugas perkuliahan arsitektur itu mostly menguji kreativitas dan inovasi, perlu banyak brainstorming, trials and errors, dan cari – cari inspirasi (a.k.a scrolling through Pinterest for long hours), and well, we can’t decide when our brain finally comes out with ideas. And let me tell you this: most of the time, your brain will go anywhere and not to your projects.

2. Shifted My Spending Priorities to Art Supplies
I am amazed on the broad range and options when it comes to coloring tools.

3. Experienced Sleep Deprivation For The First Time
It is not something ground breaking to know that architecture college students lack of sleep. It's 10 pm? Still feels like 6 pm. Its 2 am? More like 11 pm. Definisi sore dan malam kami tergantung waktu kami mulai mengerjakan tugas. 00.00 is still the afternoon if our drawings aren't finished yet. Since i'm an night owl, it's not actually novel to me to still be awake when everyone asleep and finally hop to bed when it’s near everyone’s wake up time. But there’s one time, di tengah chaos tugas perkuliahan, I didn’t sleep finishing 3 sketch assignments in one night and the consequences hit me right from the morning. Seharian itu saya mendadak bego dan lemot tiap diajak bicara, ngomongnya ngelantur, penglihatan kabur, mual, dan bete all the time. I will do anything to not experience that kind of day again. But who am lying to… next semester will obviously whoop me.

4. Made 30++ 2D Compositions

The basic of all visual art fields: actually learning how compositions work. Why did you choose this color? why did you put it there? Why did you make it smaller than the rest?

"Because it looks pretty" or
"It feels right" or
"Suddenly it turns out quite good"
and other intuition/luck based answers is unacceptable.

You should have legit reasons on why you make those particular compositions.

5. Made 50++ Architectural Sketches

To be honest, dengan intensitas tugas sketch yang seintens itu, everyone can be a great sketcher. Gimana enggak, kita bakal “dipaksa” rutin gambar minimal dua kali per minggu. Silahkan mengulang :)

6. Made 30++ Maquettes

7. Being Introduced To Many Types Of Glue and Papers
Sekarang, kalau ada orang tanya, “Ada lem?” my automatic response will be, “Lem apa?” Lem putih FOX buat kertas? Lem coklat UHU buat kayu? Lem bening UHU yang multipurpose? Lem G yang kuat dan deadly? Tell me, because I have various kinds of it my locker.

8. Got Papercuts a couple hundred times
One of the rules that frustrate me and my friends is the no ruler policy yang diberlakukan untuk mata kuliah rupa dasar. So how to accomplish that perfect straight line? Use your finger! I surrender my index finger for a semi perfect straight line.

9. Got Accidentally and Stupidly Poisoned By Glue
Sekalinya kena kulit? Nyes. Banget. Belum lagi pas mencoba mengelupas lem dari kulit. Mata bisa sampai berkaca – kaca.

There’s this one rainy night, I’m in the middle of creating my maquette due tomorrow morning. Gara – gara terlalu lama berinteraksi dengan lem G, at some point mata saya perih, saya ngerasa mual, dan paru – paru saya panas. Setelah 15 menitan kabur ke teras rumah sambil menghirup udara luar sebanyak – banyaknya, I continue making my maquette sambil nahan napas dan pakai kacamata, dan ambil regular breaks ke teras buat napas. It is that deadly.

10. Believed that The Power Of Kepepet itu benar benar ada
I finally believe. As people said, the greatest inspiration is the deadline.

11. Mulai Kebal Kopi dan Bunyi Alarm
My first interaction with coffee itu saat lagi masa – masa belajar untuk SBM. Sekalinya minum kopi, I can be fully awake for 8 hours straight. Tapi semenjak pertengahan semester 1, I still feel hella sleepy after coffee. I didn’t even hit the snooze button but every morning my alarm was silenced automatically after ringing for 10 minutes straight with no respond. The only thing that will never fail me is my mom's voice.

Now I know Ahmad Djuhara, Daliana Suryawinata, Ridwan Kamil, Yori Antar, Vo Trong Nghia, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Le Corbusier, and oh of course the incredible Zaha Hadid.

After six months, I learn...
1. Kertas A3 itu ternyata kecil ya?
2. Nge bor kayu itu ternyata asik banget.
4. Feel the need to travel more.
5. “Artwork is never finished. It is just abandoned.”
7. “Less is more when more is too much.”

So yes, I do experienced and learned a lot through the first semester and I got a feeling semester depan yang bakal dimulai less dari seminggu bakal membawa lebih banyak chaos dan pengalaman unexpected. Hi, 2nd semester, I'm ready for you! (um, kinda) (in horror) (wish me luck)

#TravelJournal: Singapore Part 2

DAY 2
18 November 2016

4. Beach Road

It was 9:00 AM, and it was an aimless stroll through the streets. Turns out, there are some interesting buildings along Beach Road with its own different forms.

5. South Beach

That wooden entrance hall tho, it fascinated my eyes.

6. Suntec City International Convention and Exhibition Centre

Went here mainly because the IT exhibition buat mencari memory card dengan harga miring, didn't expect to be fascinated with the interior of this convention center. The building is HUGE.

7. Esplanade: Theaters on The Bay

Kalau kata papa saya: Gedung Duren.

It is best to visit the bridge at night when the lights are lit.

9. Marina Bay Sands Shopping Mall

Finally, we end the day by having dinner at DC Comics Superhero Cafe. The Cafe is indeed eye catching with its superhero theme and human size superhero figures at front.

#TravelJournal: Singapore Part 1

I WILL never get bored of Singapore.

I will never get tired of the majestic streets, filled with fascinating skyscrapers, aesthetic buildings, and fast paced crowds living in the midst of it. I will never get fed up with the diversity, the foreign languages and faces, and lights among them.

Taking a major at architecture really changes the way I see the world. Usually, my eyes only light up at price tags of books at Kinokuniya and clothes at Tempt or H&M, but in this trip, my eyes widen every where-- in the luxurious Changi Airport, and mostly among the sidewalks and every corner of buildings. If in previous trip, I enjoy window shopping from a store to another, now, I savor the simple long walks and get lost in between mega structures in every different form. I feel thrilled every time I decide to wander my eyes higher than usual, the view is breath taking. Turns out, I was missing out a lot. Buildings are beautiful if you look at them from the right angle.

DAY 1
17 November 2016

1. National Library
First stop setelah check in hotel: National Library of Singapore. Located at Victoria St, it serves the image of Modern Architecture: Complex & Sophisticated. The building is huge. Sayang banget gak nyempetin buat masuk. I bet I love it there dan gak mau pulang - pulang.

2. Bugis Junction
The Singaporean version of Malioboro. Disana ada Capital Mall yang punya Cold Storage, Pull & Bear, H&M, Kinokuniya (my fav!), Typo (my second fav!) and other interesting stores, terus ada Bugis shopping center yang jadi pusat oleh - oleh Singapura such as chocolate, key chains, tote bags, phone accessories, t-shirts, you name it! Dan di pinggir jalan ada banyak gerai fast foods halal such as Popeye, Burger King, Long John Silver etc. The prices there relatif lebih affordable dibanding di mal - mal lainnya.

3. Chijmes
Gothic styled-historic-building. Castle in town. There are restaurants, shops, and multi functional hall untuk musicals, theatrical performances or wedding receptions. The building is just magical and romantic, especially at night.

#JournalDay1: The Moment When My Day Is A Tumblr Post

I WOULD probably take a binocular to search for my non existent 'care' if you have the audacity to ask "Wait, don't you have a college class today?" because no. Do I look like I care? I'm in total awareness of skipping one class --that always take a full day on every Saturday, but hey look at this perfect day that I've been longing to have for months: waking up early but not in rush to leave the bed, let alone the house, starting the day with with a glass of sweet sourly fresh cold drink and get a slight shiver on every gulp, back to back with Game of Thrones episodes, and wanting to slap Cersei every time she appears on screen, receiving something I ordered online, and wearing a cute turquoise socks with pink flowers all day, well plus a horrible period pain but hey I deal with that every month. No pencils, no papers, no portfolios, no glue stains, no cuts. Life today is basically tumblresque with cute socks and sweet drinks and tv series and rain, and not like every other normal day when it just like, how life really goes lol.

It's rough week for me, awful things happened in between college life and assignments and my mood swings decided to behave badly. I have to drag myself out of bed with full force and even after that I still should deal with the urge of giving up and try very hard not to spontaneously cry in the middle of crowd. Winding down seems like a right step to take. People might wonder, so hello people, world, this is how an introvert brain is wired. We recover ourselves from tiredness of interacting with the world by being alone. And no, we are not depressed or shy or anti social. We are the simple human being with simple needs. And if you still have questions, please proceed to someone else, you are draining us.

I kinda need to take a step back and take a look at the struggles and events that happened this week and I realize that the reason why I get upset so easily is that, I respond to negativity from people by thinking about it way too much, it affects my mood. Moreover, I get upset because I never expect any negativity coming intentionally from people. I didn't expect them to behave in such a way. I didn't expect to meet people who is just annoying and uncaring and have a very big ego to feed and just talk crap. I thought that if I treat them nicely, then they'll be nice too, but hey, it is new lesson to learn. And someone told me this mantra, basically straight forward life tip for every one who is in the middle of annoyance : Expect bullshit, but don't accept it. And I'm here, clapping my hands slowly in amusement and repeating a nod. Negative people doesn't deserve your time, or a place in your mind, or even the switch for your mood.

So dear someone, thank you for the real talk and probably the most useful and relevant life tip, you saved me from any upcoming annoyance in the future. And life, after this day ends, I'm ready for another battle round with you.

what i learn after being an architecture student for two weeks

dari motivasi dan insights...
"Memasukan nyawa ke dalam bangunan is the hardest task of an architect."
"Jangan hina otak anda sendiri. Kapabilitas otak Anda itu besar, luas. Learn the architecture history with your whole heart. Banyak fenomena menarik yang bisa Anda dapat dari sana."
"Pernah belajar relativitas? Mengapa ruang ini dianggap luas? Karena ruangan sebelumnya lebih sempit. Mengapa ini dianggap terang? Karena pengamat berjalan dari tempat yang lebih gelap. Terasa luas dari sempit, terasa terang dari gelap."
"Bukan soal sosok, jasad. Tapi ruang."
"Arsitek itu ingin selalu bikin orang lain bahagia dari desain mereka."
"Kepercayaan itu soal kompetensi! Rajin magang! Rajin upgrade diri! Rajin cari pengalaman!"
-Pak Ahmad Djuhara,
Ketua Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia,
di Kuliah Perdana 'Archilecture', August 8

sayings yang bikin mikir...

1.Le Corbusier was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and modern architecture. His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout Europe, India, and the Americas. Le Corbusier was influential in urban planning, and was a founding member of the Congrès international d'architecture modern (CIAM).:
"We must always say what we see, but above all and more difficult, we must always see what we see."
-Le Corbusier,
Legendary Swiss-French Architect

"Bukan cuma soal desain, tapi juga efek dari desain itu kepada penghuninya, kepada lingkungan sekitarnya, kepada pengamatnya."
"Usia karya itu menunjukan kualitas pekerjaan arsitek."

"Percuma cantik jika rapuh. Percuma indah jika tidak berguna."
- Drs. Ing E. Pradipto,
Dosen Pengampu Struktur dan Konstruksi Bangunan 1

"The Architecture world is unique in that we are expected to be creative like artistsexecute like engineers, negotiate like businessmen and make like craftsmen, but at the same time are asked to discover our own unique style and approach."
